Our memory of Wolfgang Sawallisch

26 February 2013

A gentleman and a conductor. In these days, these are the most frequent words that people are using to remember Wolfgang Sawallisch, who has died last Friday in his house in Grassau, southern Germany, at 89, his mind still strong and clear.

A gentleman and a conductor. That’s how the Amici della Scala want to remember him too, from some encounters we had many years ago. For many extents, Wolfgang Sawallisch has perfectly embodied the ancient figure of the German “Kapellmeister”, conceiving its musical profession as a deep duty, devoid of any selfish ambition. For this reason, and also for his humanity and his elegance, included his gentle sense of humour, we thank him for everything he did for the music in the world. Goodbye, Maestro.
